Thomas “Myles” Feltenberger, aka “Veltenhill,” is a collage artist and musician from the Chicagoland area currently based in so-called Vancouver, British Columbia. Their practice focuses on sampling and synthesis to create dense soundscapes and video collages, often moving between genres and worlds. Myles has a Bachelor of Media Arts in New Media + Sound Arts from Emily Carr University of Art + Design and frequently engages in the local music and art spaces across Vancouver.
Myles initially ventured into music around 2015, starting with a MIDI controller for DJing and a veneration of music. As they moved through amateur DJing, they eventually found that making music in the digital audio workstation environment was their passion, especially in sample manipulation and collages of loops. Over time, Myles found their way into the music scene in Chicago, and started working within the underground hip-hop circles. They have collaborated with numerous artists, including Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire, LOWERLIPDRIP, and SICKSWAYS while also writing and producing their own songs.
In more recent years, Myles started to develop a practice of using collage to create supporting visuals for their music. Whether audio or visual, their collages embrace aggression, abrasiveness, and juxtaposition. In their work “Selected Samples 2024,” Myles created an audio/visual durational performance focusing on self-expression through sampling, lyricism, synthesis, and vocal performance. At the core of the project, Myles Veltenhill reconnected with their foundations in sample-based hip-hop music to express their frustrations with self, country, and the divine. Utilizing audio samples from music and field recordings, they crafted beat-based music that resembles and pays homage to what inspired them to initially create art and music. This sonic collage was then fed into an audio-reactive visualizer compiled from their personal archive of cellular phone footage, and distorted through digital processing. Each piece, visually and sonically, was a base element of their life, alchemized into performance and movement. The project won the 2024 Basically Good Media Lab / New Media & Sound Arts Student Research Award. Myles has also been in collaboration with the Branching Songs Ensemble: an art project that combines sound art, land-based practices, and research in order to bring awareness to the ecology of the west coast. Often, Branching Songs Ensemble will perform in areas that are at risk of resource extraction. Myles performs with the ensemble by using live looping of contact microphones affixed to trees, which are activated by other performers. They also provided research used in the creation of a virtual instrument that interprets the electrical resistance of water moving through plants and trees to yield resonant synthesis.Currently, Myles is continuing to work with audio reactive visuals in relation to modular synthesis, with a new conceptual focus on improvisational performance within this system. It is their objective to create a unique, ephemeral performance that melds memory and nostalgia with body-presence and focus on the present moment.
